Is it even possible to use > three com ports at once? Not without extra hardware. PCs normally have two physical serial ports, but they "appear" to have 4, through IRQ sharing. Therefore, you can never use more than two simultaneously. You can get a serial expansion board which gives you two more. These boards are pretty cheap, under $50.
