Now, technically 2d sprites that are drawn with the ability to rotate are just texturemapped polygons with just one side, drawn with a subset of the 3d engine, thus it might be possible. However, that polygon would only have one side, so it might cause problems for the other side to be displayed. The easiest thing to do would probably be to use the full 3d engine to draw the sprite as a true 3d polygon with 2 sides (front and back).
