The predominant ways seem to be OBB and AABB trees. Here's a link to a page that gives a bit more info about it but there's loads of acadic papers on the net. http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20000330/bobic_03.htm I'm sure these can be used to work out what is visible to the camera but I'm still working out how its done.
