I've sussed it out -- anyone who wants to know what the prob is listen carefully as I shall say zis only once. I had erronously left in GsInit3D() (from playing around with 3D stuff) which converts the coodinate system so the origin is at the centre of the screen (not top left) so it WAS drawing the boxes, only off the screen.
