Are the slopes different angles or the same? If they're the same you could just add a "slope-up" or "slope-down" flag to your tile properties value. Maybe even have a range of slope values for different angles. For a more general solution I can't see anything wrong with doing look ahead as you mentioned. It's not like you'd need to look at very many values. This is (kind of) the way I usually do gravity in 3D worlds. Martin.
