"dithering" is usually using patterns of colours to "fake" other colours not available in the graphics mode. For example look at how greys are produced in black and white printing. The dither matrix is usually a representation of how two available colours are "mixed" (i.e. which pixels are which colour in a region) to produce another colour. If you're only interested in using available colours you probably don't need to worry about it. That's not to say that the PS2 might have a completely different view of what these terms mean, of course... :) Martin.
