What OS/hardware combo are you using ? Have you tried straight DOS ? Also, perhaps try using COM4. Oddly one of the guys here mentioned that another serial device on a PC wouldn't work as COM1 ... but did as COM4 ... and COM4 was physically wired to the same port.
