I now know that there is a program called Pixel3D that will sort out the normals for you (converts Lightware, 3DS etc.) BUT the demo version will not allow you to save the new model :-( and I haven't got any cash left after buying the Yaroze! Ho hum... One thing - I tried double sided polys and it worked! But doesn't that mean the hardware is having to draw twice as many each frame? And it takes up twice as much memory...
