Lands of Midnight: Map Demo 30/08/00 This is a demo I've put together to show what I'm up to at the moment. I'm writing a game similar to the classic Lords of Midnight (LoM), which was released on the ZX Spectrum and C64 in the early 80's. LoM is basically a strategy adventure game, where you take control of various lords on the land of Midnight, and attempt to protect the various keeps and citadels from the invading armies of Doomdark. I've decided to call my game Lands of Midnight (although Beyond Midnight is tempting...) as it will differ in many ways to the original, one idea being that LoM will be just one scenario out of many that can be played. Anyway, on to the demo. The demo itself involves moving one of the two lords available (Luxor and Corleth) around the Midnight map. There are two types of demo available, Solo Play for one playstation, and Link Play for those of us with *cough* two yaroze playstations and a link cable. Solo Play Load in the files to the playstation, for PAL displays use autoPAL.bat and NTSC use autoNTSC.bat. Once in, select Solo Play and you'll be in control of Luxor. Left and Right turns his point of view, and the X button moves him forward. Press R1 to switch to Corleth, and R2 to switch back. Now feel free to explore the map. Link Play As in Solo Play, download the files to one playstation, then connect up the second playstation to the PC and do the same again. With both playstations running the demo, connect them up with the link cable, select Link Play on both playstations and away you go. You shouldn't have any problems with this, just don't select Link Play until the playstations are connected to each other. In Link Play, one psx is the Master and the player controls Luxor, the other is the Slave and the player controls Corleth. The actual pad data from one machine is sent to the other each frame, so that when a player moves his lord across the map on his psx, the lord will also be moved on the map of the other playstation, keeping the lord and map data identical on each machine. In this way you can see on one psx when the lord is moved on the other. If you can, try it for yourself. Press 'start' to go back to the menu and to exit. If you have any comments on the demo, have any problems with it or notice any graphics/text glitches please let me know. The landscape terrain drawing is far from perfect so I'll need to spend some time on that. My emailie is hanno@btinternet.com Thanks for trying my demo, it's much appreciated!! Acknowledgements and thanks to: Chris Wild for the LoM graphics set and map file. Chris wrote the PC conversions of LoM and Doomdark's Revenge (LoM sequel), and also The Midnight Engine, an enhanced version of LoM for Windows. Check them out at www.icemark.com. Javier Ventoso for the TimZip compression program. James Russell for the DataMan file manager. James Rutherford for the FSnap screen grabber. And, of course, Matt and Marc (of Eclipse) for their efforts in keeping the Yaroze scene alive. :o)
