If you were able to see in 3D shapes from looking at Single Image Random Dot Stereograms (SIRDSs) or 'Stareograms' that were popular a year or two ago (those pictures of apparently random dots that people saw 3D things in) you should be able to see this demo in stereo with a bit of patience. How do you view the demo? --------------------------------------- If you're used to cross eyed fusion no problem. If not what you have to do is squint to see the stereo image. The following applies to my 14 monitor with my eye separation, your setup it may be a little different, go back further if you have a bigger screen. - Sit about 5-6 ft (2 m) away from the monitor. (Go back closer later). - Stretch an arm right out in front of you so that you have a finger pointing just below one of the cars shown on the screen. - Whist focussing on the tip of your finger become aware that you can actually see four images (maybe superimposed) of the car in your peripheral vision. - Now focussing on the tip of you finger move it slowly closer to you until you see only three cars in your peripheral vision. - Try and focus on the middle car , if you can you should now see the scene in stereoscopic 3D. What is done on the PSX to make it happen? ----------------------------------------------------------- You need to get your world displayed in a (vertically) split screen mode so that two images are shown of your world seen side by side from slightly different viewpoints. To setup a split screen display check out the pointers that Stuart at scee.dev posted to scee.3dGraphics on 15/12/97 - Nice one Stuart! given the quirks of the code this could have taken a long time to solve without help... The important point is to produce an image that is seen slightly from the left on the right hand side of the screen and an image seen slightly from the right on the left hand side of the screen. This sounds odd but thats the way it works under cross eyed viewing. Is this relevant? ------------------- Well, you just lost half your horizontal resolution, so its not neccessarily relevant to games at the moment, and certainly not in this form. In fact stereo 3D gaming does not appear to have done very well so far - but at some point in the future it will be standard. More immediately split screen techniques allows n player, n view games. (Though what about Red/Green or Red/Blue stereo in the interim anybody?) The Controls ----------------- Cross - moves you forward Square - backward Left and Right - rotate PAD R1 - (the top button on the front right hand side) increases disparity (sense of depth) PAD R - ( the bottom " ) decreases " (printout is given on pc monitor) Drive on the road - no problem. Drive into a 'Walaa' block - not too good, eventually he gets tired of it. Drive on a green square - either jump up above the blocks or returm to the ground. (Well I never said it was a game.) Why can't I see in 3D? --------------------------------- Firstly, patience, keep on trying. Secondly if you really can't fuse the images don't worry, up to a tenth of the population can't, so dont worry about it, you're probably part of the tenth that changes the world! DISCLAIMER -------------------- Cross eyed stereo fusion is not likely to be good for you. Neither I nor anybody else will accept liability for any problems that result from viewing this demo, proceed at you own risk !
