Student Work - Coursework 1

The students on COM3311 "Programming Interactive Graphical Systems" have recently finished their first coursework. For most of them this was supposed to be a driving simulation based on my 3D Tutorial. A few students have had access to Yarozes since mid November, the rest of the students have only been using the machines for seven weeks. The examples shown below are some of the best in the group, I will try to put up more when I get the time (though note that Alan Yuen's demo can be found at http://www.netyaroze-europe.com/~alanyuen/ftp/). There's no source code, only executables. Students may put up their source code after the Easter break, when I'll also put up their email addresses.

Car Tag

Notes:

This two-player game is a modified version of 'IT'. To distinguish the truck that is 'IT' a rotating blue light is displayed above it. The player that is 'IT' also has an advantage in that their top speed is greater than the other truck (170 compared to 120). Points are scored by catching the other truck if you are it, or by evading the chasing truck for a set time (45 'seconds'). There are three distinct power ups that can be collected. These effect the player differently depending on whether they are it etc.

BLUE CUBE : increases the players top speed by 10

RED CONE : reverses the opponents steering (left becomes right etc.) corrects any steering alterations made to your car

GREEN SPHERE : toggles between chase view and zooming view NB. only effects the chasing truck

After any score (catching or avoiding) the trucks variables are reset to their defaults. The view is also reset to a plan view.

Bom

Notes:

This is a two-player prototype of a game Peter is working on featuring dynamic TMD creation. His boms walk about and can pass the crown/flame between them. He has an interesting and detailed design, which we might get to see when he puts up his web pages.

Gem Hunter

Notes:

You are a participant in the great inter-galactic gem hunt. In your magnificent space craft (which looks remarkably like the kind of automobile that people used to drive way back in the 20th century) you must travel around collecting gems. Drive around the track and catch the diamond shaped gems which float around. Catch a gem by driving exactly underneath it. There are five to catch and you have 400 time units to do it in. There are two blue holes in the road, which will suck you into another dimension populated by deranged Yaroze programmers - to be avoided at all costs. For every two gems you collect you get a 'jump' which allows you to jump over a blue hole. Avoid the robot-controlled vehicle, if you get too close to it the track breaks and you both fly off into the unknown.

Controls: CROSS - move forward, SQUARE - reverse, CIRCLE+CROSS - jump, LEFT - turn left, RIGHT - turn right, TOP RIGHT - hero car view, BOTTOM RIGHT - camera mounted on robot vehicle, START - new game, SELECT - reset Yaroze.

Bike Simulation

Notes:

This is a motor bike simulation. The 'physics' of the bike was modeled using functions to simulate a real bike, with 150 bhp, running weight 650lbs, 6 gears, and a 14000 rpm limit. A power curve was simulated, with peak power being at 10500 rpm.

Controls: SELECT - exit, START - resets to starting line, L1 & L2 - select a world view, R1 & R2 - select a bike view, LEFT - turn/lean left, RIGHT - turn/lean right, UP - accelerate, DOWN brake, SQUARE - change gear (up when accelerating, down otherwise)

Vegetable Rally

Notes:

This is a one-player game where you race your carrot against the apple (apparently the apple got into the race disguised as a potato).

Controls: LEFT - Pad Left, RIGHT - Pad Right, ACCELERATE - Square, BRAKE - Cross. Lap Record 26.2s

RACE

Notes:

This is a one-player game that looks and acts like Wipeout. Robert had help with the modeling from his brother giving the game a professional look.

controls are: left / right - steer, L1 / R1 - steer heavily + brake a bit, cross - accelerate, square - brake,select - quit
