SYNOPSIS

DESCRIPTION

A newsletter put together by some total spak-head who still hasn't figured out how to send e-mail. Featuring all the news that's fit to print (and quite a bit that isn't).

/*
Following an embarassing legal tussle (boring internal dialogue actually), I've been forced to change the name. It's now called 'NYoosletter'. Blame James Shaughnessy for that one. No sod suggested any alternatives, so it was either that or 'Codfanglers'.

Anyone who was reading this thing last week might have noticed that I implied there were only two people who signed themselves up to the mailing list. If you checked the header, you would have seen that there were in fact /nine/ people receiving the message, thereby demonstrating that I don't know how to count /or/ send e-mail. Apologies to everyone for sharing your e-mail addresses with a bunch of strangers. I already sold everyones' e-mails to some bulk mailing lists anyway...

E-groups decided to pack in at exactly the same time as I was getting ready to post the newsletter, so you can blame them for last weeks screw-up. Hopefully, it'll all go smoothly this time. I didn't get any complaints or unsubs, so I assume none of you minded too much.

Apologies to James Shaughnessy for accidentally registering http://i.am/bart.simpson and then pointing it to his Yaroze page (http://www.netyaroze-europe.com/~shaughnj/). Not that I'm at all sorry for the embarassment and inconvenience that it may have caused him, just that it was a crap joke and no-one noticed.

Thanks to everyone who's offered to contribute their tips and ideas. Thanks to Derek Da Silva for bailing me out at the last minute with some game release dates and details.

You might have noticed that I spattered a couple of my e-mail addresses around last weeks letter. This wasn't because I was showing off the free e-mail addresses I'd registered, or for their aesthetic value: I need peoples' feedback. Do people hate this thing? Do they like it? Is it even remotely informative? What could be done to improve it? Do you know any decent places to look up games or Yaroze info? How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? ..you get the idea. Anything; even moronic observations or stuff about your cat is perfectly welcome. e-mail: ben.johnson@canada.com.

**Fill In The Blanks**

// No-one's filled in the blanks yet. Means I'll have to bore you with more // details about the Grav Compo and the members demo hub.

        Grav Comp. Free Entry. Prizes.

Scott Campbell's made a couple of minor updates to game 1. He seems to have added basic gameplay and increased the resolution a bit. Still nothing for download, but it looks pretty promising.

The tech guys at SCEE actually seem to be updating the news page. They've come up with a new help file and DOS utility for formatting memory cards and saving the download speed. Pretty handy for people who never read the 'getting started' manual.

3D Primitive Naming Standard controversy rages:
The most fascinating topic to appear on the newsgroups this week. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the idea. Even 2D graphics could do with a proper naming convention. Just I haven't got a clue how to translate that down to an easily digestible snippet (*sigh).

I'm not even going to talk about what colour the SCEE site is...

Thanks to Carlos for making the 'Serenity' post to freetalk just before I'm getting ready to send this thing out. It's good for a couple of sentences if only to explain that I'm far too slow-witted to do anything with it.

**Stuff that was hot about 6 months ago..**

More about the Playstation 2. Thanks to CVG's rumour-mongering, everyone seems to be in a rush to second guess Sony. The only thing that is certain is that it will use DVD. Not sure whether that means the Playstation 2 will double as a DVD player, but that certainly seems possible. Dev kits will be available early next year, and it's due to be unveiled at the Tokyo Game Show in April '99. The spec is said to include a custom-built CPU, 'hardware B-Splining and a proprietary "skinning" technology'. It's rumoured to be able to handle 10 million polygons a second (more than twice as many as the Dreamcast). Apparently, Sony have said that it won't include backward compatibility. Seeing as they're throwing in a load of proprietary hardware, it seems less likely that there will be some kind of home development kit available for it in the near future. There's another rumour that Sony has developed a compressed version of the original Playstation board. If it's true, then that could mean portable Playstations, DVD's with built-in Playstations or something similar to Nintendo's Gateway system. Great news for Yaroze owners if it turns out to be true.

Another almost interesting snippet I borrowed from FGN: It's ruoured that parts of Nintendo's Next Generation machine are being developed in the UK along with Nintendo Japan. There's another rumour that Rare are involved somewhere along the line. They didn't seem too impressed with the Dreamcast stuff at the Tokyo Game Show. Could mean that they know something..

Nintendo have released the details of the Color Gameboy release. It's out in the UK on November 23rd, and will have four compatible games available on the launch date. These are Tetris DX, Pocket Bomberman, Quest for Camelot and Game & Watch Gallery.

While rumours of a possible PlayStation price drop to £79.99 persist, Nintendo have seized the initiative with a £99.99 N64 pack which includes Goldeneye plus control pad (available 16 October). Expect a response from Sony next week...

Here's a few release dates confirmed by their respective publishers for retail:

TombRaider 3 PC/PS Nov 20 CORE/EIDOS
Turok 2 N64/PC Nov 27 GUANA/ACCLAIM
Legend of Zelda N64 Nov 27 NINTENDO
Controversy over Mac OS 8.5 box colour:

Dixons to stock Macs again. Oh dear.. so much for the Apple revival. Apple are planning to send in their own sales people (for obvious reasons).

Not exactly new, but Nintendo have brought out a load of miniature Game & Watch keyrings. They sell for about 13 quids each, and titles available so far include Donkey Kong JR, Super Mario Bros and Fire.

Ooh, just one more:

 * I've had a bit of a crisis in the office this week. We're between *
 * managers at the moment, so I'm transferring my energies from kissing *
 * arses to putting this newsletter together. One of my mate's is *
 * leaving today, so I've had to dash round the shops with the *
 * whip-round money to buy an amusing card and twenty JPS. Means I've *
 * had to cut it a bit short this time. Sorry 'bout that. *
